Argaka

The country church of Saint Varvara is located east of the village. It has been extensively renovated and only the few capitals of columns and the carved framings around the doors reveal its age, probably being of the 18th century.

The village population has seen growth from 90 inhabitants in 1881 to 793 at the last census in 2001. Behind the initial increase in the population was the Limni copper mines, after its closure the village managed to thrive due to the fertile land of the 'Limni' (Lake), which along with modern agricultural methods enabled growth of profitable produce. Currently there has been an influx of ex pats either retiring or investing in holiday homes. Upper Argaka stands upon a slope with excellent views towards the sea and of the Paphos forest, the east part of the village has officially been deemed as a region of excellent natural beauty. Several streams flow down from the slope towards the sea, indeed with a relatively large one flowing next to the village. The river of Makounta, upon which the Argaka -Makounta dam was constructed is located southeast of the village.

Given the excellent location of the village and due to the relatively large tract of land that is irrigated naturally it has an abundance of vegetable farmers. Apart from cereals and legumes, forage plants, vegetables (mainly cucumbers, tomatoes and melons) citrus fruits and olive trees, the hot climate helps the growing of some semi-tropical plants such as Indian fig and the loquat. As you drive around you will see many greenhouses and vegetable fields. The lower part of the village has been developed recently and runs along the coast. Here you will find a variety of supermarkets and tavernas, a good place to rest up and look out to the sea or to buy some of the local produce you have seen growing in the area.

So remember when taking a trip to Polis and Latchi area take time to visit Argaka to see a village full of life and proud of its agricultural industry.
